Newsroom

Although the path of Hurricane Idalia is uncertain, Hillsborough County will likely feel the effects of a 4- to 7-foot storm surge. This storm surge will likely be delayed. So while it may look nice outside, water is expected to rise rapidly and dangerously through Wednesday, Aug. 30. Emergency managers ask that residents stay away from the water throughout Wednesday, Aug. 30, until they give the all-clear.

Storm surge is what happens when an abnormal amount of water from the ocean is pushed to shore by weather like tropical storms or hurricanes. During hurricane season, storm surge is one of the primary threats to Hillsborough County residents, and one of the factors that determine whether your neighborhood will be ordered to evacuate.

It's important to know your evacuation zone and understand that when an evacuation is called it's time for your family to leave.

Residents that live in mobile and manufactured homes should know when an evacuation is called, they must evacuate - no matter where their home is located in the county. All mobile and manufactured homes are considered to be in Evacuation Zone A.

In addition to the storm surge, Hillsborough County is expected to receive 4 to 6 inches of rain and flooding.

Flood zones are federally identified zones which indicate a property's risk for flooding at any time of the year, including as a result of heavy or steady rain.

This zone has nothing to do with hurricanes or other emergencies, and everything to do with your property insurance and building requirements. Nationally, these zones are classified as Zones A (Special Flood Hazard Area), B, C, D, V and X. Every property is in a flood zone. Find My Flood Zone.

Of special note, residents with Electric Vehicles (EVs) and other lithium ion-powered devices should relocate those devices away from areas that may be impacted by storm surge. Salt water can compromise batteries and cause fires. During Hurricane Ian, a number of fires were associated with EVs.
